Queenslanders Beat the World in Kiel

Queensland Male and Female 470 pairs have taken first and second place respectively at the ISAF Grade 1 regatta in Kiel.

Male sailing pair of Matt Belcher and Nick Behrens, based at RQYS, finished their strong European tour in style to secure their position on the AIS Australian Sailing Team for 2007.

“Kiel Week was great racing in a range of conditions and something we really enjoyed after two weeks of virtually no wind sailing in Hungary. It was also our most successful regatta for this year” Belcher Said.

Female pair Lauren Jeffries and Rike Zaegelmayer came away with the impressive placing of second overall.  This is their best result in a Grade 1 event and their first medal in a major international regatta.

Eleven schools competed for the title and they were divided into two groups for two days of preliminary round racing. Tully beat Iona College, Ominston College and Anglican Church Grammar School's B team on both days, but went down twice to Brisbane Grammar School's A team. The top three teams from each group progressed to the 'Gold Fleet '.

Queensland Solo Sailor Averts Disaster

Solo sailor Margaret Williams’ second bid at becoming the first woman to circumnavigate Australia solo, non-stop and unassisted almost came to an untimely end after she recently encountered a severe storm off the south-west coast of Tasmania.

The Queensland doctor who set off from Fremantle on 2 June to break one of sailing’s last standing records came perilously close to losing her 12-metre sloop ‘Against All Odds’ to cliffs and reef at Port Davey.

White Whale Migaloo Back in Queensland

Migaloo the white humpback whale is about to enter Queensland waters on his 2006 migration and pilots, skippers, swimmers and snorkellers are urged to respect the special limits around the whale.

Environment Minister Desley Boyle said Migaloo had again been declared a 'special interest' whale in Queensland waters this year to ensure he could swim freely.

"A 'special interest' whale declaration means no-one can drive a boat or Jet Ski closer than 500m or fly an aircraft closer than 2000ft to the whale without written permission," Ms Boyle said.
