The 2004/2005 Yachting Queensland Award recipients were announced today.  
Selected from a pool of quality nominations from all over the state, the Yachting Queensland Awards are presented to Queensland sailors that exhibit outstanding achievement in the sport of sailing.

Skandia Takes Line Honours In Sydney Gold Coast
In a one boat race for line honours, Grant Wharington’s 98 foot Skandia crossed the finish line in the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race at 7.36pm last night against the backdrop of the sparkling lights of the Queensland Gold Coast.

Redcliffe Mayor Starts 2006 Fairway Challenge  
The 2nd Annual Fairway  Challenge was held on February 25th at Redcliffe.  Moreton Bay Boat Club Sailing Branch hosted the event and was delighted with the turnout. Nineteen of Brisbane’s premier racing yachts ensured intense competition in all divisions.
Mayor Alan Sutherland fired the starting gun off the Redcliffe Jetty, and the yachts provided a spectacle along the foreshore to Scotts Point, hoisting spinnakers for the sprint back to the jetty.

Yachting Qld Race Management Course - May/June
Yachting Queensland would like to schedule a YQ Race Management Course in May/June this year at the Yachting Queensland offices at Manly, Brisbane.
This comprehensive two-day course covers regatta management from planning, risk management to on-water activities, rules and protests. The course cost is $180.00per person and covers instructor costs, presentations, reference material and a comprehensive take-home manual. The course is open to anyone that would like to attend however to receive the final qualification, pre-requisites Senior First Aid and YA Safety Boat Endorsement are required.

Experts Assess Coral Bleaching in Southern Queensland
Coral bleaching in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef was inspected first-hand by leading Australian climate change experts. The GBRMPA team spent three days assessing corals off Keppel Island near Rockhampton with experts from the University of Queensland and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. The GBRMPA team later assessed corals in the Mackay region as well as Heron and Lady Elliot Islands further down the coast.
'The bleaching we have seen in the Keppels, by comparison, is quite severe. Should the hot conditions resume, it is possible this level of bleaching could happen elsewhere in the Great Barrier Reef.'
