1.  Hamilton Island Race Week Wins Australian Tourism Award
The Hahn Premium Hamilton Island Race Week at was named as Australia’s most outstanding significant event at the Australian Tourism Awards on Friday night.  This is the second year running that the event has won the prestigious award.
The week-long event, which attracts thousands of sailors and yachting enthusiasts is held in August each year and continues to grow in terms of participation numbers, esteem and reputation.
The Hahn Premium Race Week at Hamilton Island won the tourism award because the event provides guests with an exciting holiday experience combined with competitive sailing. For more information visit http://www.qld.yachting.org.au/?page=22053
2.  International One Metre Central QLD Championships Hit Gladstone
The IOM Central Queensland Championships will hit Gladstone on the 25-26 March 2006.  Over 40 radio controled sailing boats will converge on Gladstone from Mackay, Bundaberg, Brisbane and the Gold Coast for a sailing event of a different kind.  See the action at the Gladstone Marina Boardwalk (between the first commercial vessel finger & Sailors Restaurant).

3.  Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race to Test Round the World Crew
Race organizers are proud to announce Melbourne businessman Grant Wharington will enter his 98 foot maxi Skandia in this year’s Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race to fine tune the crew before rejoining the Volvo Ocean Race for the start of Leg 6 in Baltimore in April.  The event will begin on April 1.

4.  40 Boats Start Orrcon Moreton Bay Classic
After extensive wind and rain the 39th Moreton Bay Classic started with 40 boats setting out in perfect E/N.E. winds at 8-10 knots.
A “Gate” was in operation at the Brisbane River in order to remove the risk of any near misses with shipping.   Fortunately, it wasn’t necessary to hold any boats over the whole weekend, a magnificent effort Bill Rolinson on Simplicity.

5. QLD Sports Stars Talk at Sport and Recreation Workshops
Past football greats Gary Belcher and Daryl White will be passing on their knowledge at a Sport and Recreation Queensland Building Active Communities Workshop on Athlete Success on March 27.  A range of workshops are currently planned for South East Queensland.

6.  Operators Urged to Register Mooring Details
A new GBRMPA initiative makes it possible for you to contact mooring owners and make a booking to use their mooring on the Great Barrier Reef.
The web-based mooring register provides a comprehensive directory of all permitted moorings.  The online facility can be searched to identify who owns a mooring and where it can be located.  All vessel operators are encouraged to use a mooring wherever possible in the Marine Park, and can search the register at www.gbrmpa.gov.au under 'Tourism and Recreation.'
Operators who are yet to pass on their contact details to the GBRMPA for inclusion in the database should contact the Tourism and Recreation Group on (07) 4750 0775.
7.  2006 Humpybash a Buzz of Excitement
Humpybong Yacht Club had 43 boats competing at the 2006 Humpy Bash at Woody Point, Redcliffe .
Competitors came from Cleveland yacht club, Oxley sailing club, Brisbane 18ft Skiffs, Multihull Yacht Club of Queensland at Manly and the Sunshine Coast area. The yard was full and buzzing with excitement.
The conditions were perfect with wind strenghts ranging from 10 to 15 knots from the North East. Competition was extremely close in all 3 divisions.

8.  South Brisbane Performs at Heron Nationals
South Brisbane Sailing Club members performed well at the Heron National Championships held on Botany Bay at the Georges River 16’ Sailing Club over the New Year period.
Club member Peter Bailey sailing with his seven year old son Nicholas were the club’s top performers, finishing fourth overall.
“It is an outstanding achievement given that the overall winner is also currently campaigning to race 49’ers at the next Olympics, second place winner is a former world champion in Flying 15 boats, and third place winner is a ten-times Heron national champion,” Club Commodore Allan Clarke said.

9.  Submissions For Yachting Australia Special Regulations 2009
The YA Safety Committee will begin formulating and considering submissions for the 2009 – Special Regulation (SR) in mid 2006.
YQ affiliated clubs and Class Associations are encouraged to submit matters for consideration of amendment and inclusion in the 2009 – SR’s.  Submissions must lodged via MYA, that is the YQ Offshore and Safety Committee.
Submissions are required to be lodged with the YQ Safety Committee by 15 March 2006.
