Southport Yacht Club wins prestigious Goodwill Cup

Celebrations are well underway at Southport Yacht Club (SYC) after the Club’s Powerboat Division regained the prestigious Goodwill Cup from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS).

The Goodwill Cup event is a navigation challenge designed to test the skills of the helmsmen (and women) as well as the navigators and observers. It is the premier annual competition between the two prominent clubs. The courses were set on the waters around Peel Island, in the Southern region of Moreton Bay over the weekend.

“We are so very proud of this achievement, and ecstatic to have brought the trophy back to SYC in a year we celebrate the Club’s 70th Anniversary” said Vice Commodore Power Graham Webb.

The Goodwill Cup is the biggest event in the SYC Power Boat calendar, with mass involvement from a number of committee members. The team was led by Vice Commodore Power Graham Webb and assisted by Past Commodore Phil Short.

2016 marks 48 years since Life Member Brian Job first competed in the event. In this winning year Brian’s Grandson Todd Brooker competed on board his vessel MIA (Missing in Action) in his first ever navigation event. In the events 54th year, SYC have won the 202 year old cup a total of 31 times, with RQYS winning 24.

First place in the traditional division was Delphys, skippered by owner and long term SYC member Brian Sherring, with SYC Chairman Scott Siganto on board, followed by Rob Deshon on Rare Pleasure. Finky Dink Too, skippered by Past Commodore and Life Member Malcolm Wood won the GPS division, second place Van Man skippered by Vice Commodore Power Graham Webb.

Southport Yacht Club will be hosting a presentation at the Club (1 Macarthur Parade, Main Beach) at 1600hrs today, Monday 7th November.
