QUEENSLAND SAILING AWARDS

The Queensland Yachting Awards night is held annually in September.  Nominations are advertised in advance with a close date usually around the end of July.  The Yachting Queensland Board members individually review and score the nomination forms and winners are decided.  Specific invitations are sent to winners, runners-up and families and the event is advertised for others to attend.  All are welcome and your support is greatly appreciated to make the night a special event.

 

 Awards

  • Club of the Year - Excellence in areas of membership, promotion, improvements, Discover Sailing etc.
  • Official of the Year - Outstanding services as an Official in QLD
  • Instructor of the Year - Outstanding services as an Instructor in QLD
  • Coach of the Year - Outstanding services as a Coach in QLD
  • The Wyuna Trophy - QLD Male Sailor of the Year
  • The Jenny VI Trophy - QLD Female Sailor of the Year
  • The Simba Trophy - QLD Junior Sailor of the Year (under 15 years old)
  • The Barrenjoey Trophy - QLD Youth Sailor of the Year (15-19 years old)
  • The Wistari Trophy - QLD Offshore Sailor of the Year
  • The Solo Trophy - Outstanding Services to Sailing in QLD

Details of the award criteria and nomination forms can be found below. 

Club of the Year                    

YQ Award for Excellence in the areas of membership, promotion, improvements, Discover Sailing etc.

This award is to be given to a Queensland sailing club that has displayed noteworthy excellence in club practices that may involve membership, club promotion, club improvements, Discover Sailing coordination or services to its community. 

Recipients of this award will also receive a nomination for the National Award in the same category.

Official of the Year               

YQ Award for Outstanding services as an Official in Queensland.

This award is to be given to someone who holds the title of a sailing official and has displayed high standards of work within the role. Their attitude toward the responsibilities as an official is constantly positive and their contributions to the sailing community are above and beyond what is normally expected. Any Queensland Official, club or otherwise, may be eligible so long as they have held that title during the award period 1 July – 30 June.

Recipients of this award will also receive a nomination for the National Award in the same category.

Instructor of the Year                       

YQ Award for Outstanding services as an Instructor in Queensland

This award is to be given to a Queensland sailing Instructor who has continuously and consistently displayed great attitude and a high standard of work toward the role. Eligibility includes Instructors who have achieved significant results due to their efforts, Instructors who display an excellence in the way they approach the required duties, and Instructors who have impacted someone else in a positive way through their actions. Any Queensland Instructor may be eligible so long as they have held that title during the award period 1 July – 30 June.

Recipients of this award will also receive a nomination for the National Award in the same category.

Coach of the Year                 

YQ Award for Outstanding services as a Coach in Queensland

This award is to be given to a Queensland sailing Coache who has continuously and consistently displayed great attitude and a high standard of work toward the role. Eligibility includes Coaches who have seen students achieve significant results thanks to their coaching efforts, Coaches who display an excellence in the way they approach the required duties, and Coaches who have impacted someone else in a positive way through their actions. Any Queensland Coach may be eligible so long as they have held that title during the award period 1 July – 30 June.

Recipients of this award will also receive a nomination for the National Award in the same category.

The Jenny VI Trophy

YQ Award for Queensland Female Sailor of the Year

This person shall have shown outstanding commitment to their particular class or have attained an outstanding performance at State, National and/or International events during the period 1 July – 30 June. Results from regattas do not specifically account for all the assessment. The degree of effort required to attain the results will be taken into account.

Nominees in this category would normally be sailing in a recognised National or International Class. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of this award. 

The Simba Trophy

YQ Award for the Queensland Junior Sailor of the Year

This trophy is to be awarded to a skipper, or skipper and crew for outstanding performance at Club, State, and/or National events during the period of 1 July – 30 June.

This award is intended to acknowledge our young sailors who are not necessarily involved in an International Class or event, but whose achievements warrant recognition. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of this award. 

All nominees must be under 15 years of age at time of event competition. 

The Solo Trophy

YQ Award for Outstanding Services to Boating in Queensland 

This trophy will be awarded for outstanding services to the sport of boating in Queensland. Such service could be in the areas of administrative services, race/event management, club and/or class association training or similar that is seen to have been of benefit to the sport in general. It is envisaged that nominees will have given some years of significant service to the sport. 

The Wyuna Trophy

YQ Award for Queensland Male Sailor of the Year

This individual will have shown outstanding commitment to their particular class or have attained an outstanding performance at State, National and/or International events during the period of 1 July – 30 June. Results fromregattas do not specifically account for all the assessment. The degree of effort required to attain the results and support given to others will be taken into account.

Nominees in this category would normally be sailing in a recognised National or International class. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of this award. 

The Barrenjoey Trophy

YQ Award for the Queensland Youth Sailor of the Year 

This trophy is to be awarded to a skipper, or skipper and crew for outstanding performance at Club, State, and/or National events during the period of 1 July – 30 June.

This award is intended to acknowledge our young sailors who are not necessarily involved in an International Class or event, but whose achievements warrant recognition. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of this award. 

All nominees must be from 15 to 19 years of age at time of event competition. 

The Wistari Trophy

YQ Award for the Offshore Sailor of the Year

This trophy is to be awarded to the owner or skipper of a yacht that has excelled in a Blue Water event or series; or trailer sailor event or series during the period 1 July - 30 June. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of the award.
